Belchite / from my window
From 24th August to 7th September 1937, loyalist Spanish Republican and rebel General Franco's forces in the Spanish Civil War fought the Battle of Belchite -Zaragoza- in and around the town. After 1939 a new village of Belchite was built adjacent to the ruins of the old one, which remains a ghost town as a memorial to the war. These photos were taken in July 2015 from the window of my hotel room in the new town of Belchite and show how some of its neighbors still yearn for the old days.
