In San Marino: Monument to the Victims of the Bombing
The Monumento alle Vittime del Bombardamento di San Marino / Monument to the Victims of the Bombing of San Marino is a memorial commemorating the 63 civilians who died during the British bombing of the neutral city-state on June 26, 1944. The monument was erected and unveiled on the 50th anniversary of the bombing, although the bronze statue, titled La Maternità ("Motherhood"), had been created by the Italian sculptor Antonio Bert in 1981. Located in Contrada Omagnano, in the city's historic center, the monument serves as a reminder of the 263 bombs dropped on the neutral territory, which sheltered approximately 100,000 refugees during the Italian Campaign. A plaque commemorates the 50th anniversary of the event (1994) and calls for peace, honoring the innocent victims of the atack: "A 50 anni dal bombardamento non cada nell'obblio la memoria delle vittime innocenti in offesa alla neutralità dell'asilo a 100 mila profughi. I Sammarinesi rinnovano la domanda di pace e di solidarietà fra tutti i popoli." / "50 years after the bombing does not fall into oblivion the memory of the innocent victims of the attack on the neutrality of the asylum for 100,000 refugees. The San Marinese renew the demand for peace and solidarity among all peoples" These photos were taken in April 2026 and show some views of Monument to the Victims of the Bombing of San Marino.
