Memorial to the freedom fighter Gunars Astra
According to the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia «Gunārs Astra was tried twice for insubordination and political activity. In 1961, he was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment and sent to camps in Mordovia and Perm regions. Upon his release from captivity, Astra remained a freethinker and was tried again in 1983, convincted and sentenced to 7 years in a special regime colony and 5 years in a labour camp. In 2022, a memorial sign, «Do not be afraid!» (sculptor Glebs Pantelejevs), was unveiled in the square opposite the building of the Riga Regional Courthouse.» These photos were taken in May 2024 and show some views of the Monument.
