Memorial to the victims of the 1988 earthquake, Gyumri
The 1988 Armenian earthquake, also known as the Spitak earthquake, occurred on December 7, 1988 in the northern region of Armenia, destroying the cities of Spitak and Gyumri. The 1988 Gyumri Earthquake Memorial, created by sculptor Frid Soghoyan and architect Razmik Manukian, was inaugurated twenty years later, on December 7, 2008, in a central square in Gyumri, behind the Church of the Holy Savior. The seven-meter-high monument is an important historical monument commemorating the devastating earthquake that struck the region in December 1988, which claimed thousands of lives and left a lasting impact on the community. This monument serves not only as a reminder of the tragic event, but also as a symbol of hope and resilience for the people of Gyumri. These photos were taken in August 2025 and show a selection of views of the monument.
