Monument to Stepan Shahumyan in Yerevan
Stepan Shahumyan (1918-1878) was an Armenian Bolshevik revolutionary and politician active throughout the Caucasus. His role as a leader of the Russian Revolution in the Caucasus earned him the nickname "Caucasian Lenin", a reference to Russian revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin. The monument to Stepan Shahumyan in Yerevan is located on Shahumyan Square, not far from Republic Square. The monument was inaugurated in 1931, as one of the symbols of socialism. According to the website Arara the statue «is made of reddish granite. It is located in front of a gray basalt wall of seven pylons. The great figure is depicted in full height, with his arms crossed on his chest. The statue symbolizes the greatness of Shahumyan and his contempt for death. Stepan Shahumyan was appointed Extraordinary Temporary Commissioner in the Caucasus by Lenin. The great leader wrote to Stepan Shahumyan: "Dear comrade Shahumyan! We are delighted with your stable and resolute policy."
